Most problems visitors run into come down to one of these. Each links to the full answer.
Tickets are sold for a date and an entry slot. The slot sets when you walk in, not when you leave.
How booking worksIn May 2026 the museum said more than 50 fake ticket sites had been shut down. Type tickets.gem.eg yourself.
Scams to avoidMore than 24,000 objects are on display. Plan 3–4 hours and see Tutankhamun first, before the crowds.
Hours and best timesThe Giza plateau is a 10–15 minute drive away and has its own entry fee and closing time.
Plan both in one dayInside the museum
For the first time since 1922, Tutankhamun’s treasures are shown together, over 4,500 objects in all. And that’s only one wing.
On your own
EGP 1,830 + your ride
Book a timed ticket on the official website , take Uber or Careem (about 30–40 minutes from central Cairo), and explore at your own pace. The cheapest option, and the layout is easy to follow.

An Egyptologist tells the stories behind the objects, and most tours include hotel pickup. The catch: many cheap tours don’t include the museum ticket. We mark which ones do.

Stay one step ahead
Most people you’ll meet are friendly and helpful. These tricks cluster around ticket sites, entrances and the pyramids.
How to avoid each oneEvery page shows when it was last checked.
Plan at least 3–4 hours. The museum shows more than 24,000 objects across 12 main galleries, so you won't see everything in one visit. If Tutankhamun is your priority, go to those galleries first.
Yes, they are two separate museums. The Egyptian Museum is on Tahrir Square in central Cairo. The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is in Giza, about 2 km from the Pyramids of Giza. Tutankhamun's complete collection (over 4,500 objects) is now shown at the GEM.
From 1 November 2026, a ticket costs EGP 1,830 for Arab and foreign adults and EGP 920 for Arab and foreign students and children. Egyptian adults pay EGP 220. Buy only on the official ticket website.
Don’t count on it. Tickets are sold online for a fixed time slot, and 2026 reports say on-site sales for foreign visitors have stopped. Book on the official website before you go.
Bring a valid photo ID such as your passport. The museum requires ID to check eligibility for discounted or free tickets, and as a deposit for audio devices.
Yes — book a timed ticket online on the official ticket website before your visit. Tickets are timed: tickets are valid only for the date and time slot you choose; the slot sets when you enter, not how long you stay; one entry per ticket, no re-entry; non-refundable and non-transferable.
