Grand Egyptian Museum and Pyramids in One Day (2026 Plan)
Two tickets, two closing times and a ten-minute drive between them. How to fit the museum and the pyramids into one unhurried day.

Yes, you can see the Grand Egyptian Museum and the Pyramids of Giza in one day, and most visitors do. The museum sits a couple of kilometres from the pyramids plateau, about 10–15 minutes by car. The trick is the order, the timing and remembering that you need two separate tickets.
In short
- Two tickets: GEM EGP 1,830 + Giza plateau EGP 700 per foreign adult (Egypt Independent; Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, 2026).
- The plateau closes at 16:00; the museum stays open later.
- Allow a full day: 6–10 hours with a tour.
- Check whether a tour includes both tickets.
How far is the Grand Egyptian Museum from the Pyramids?
The museum is just off the Cairo–Alexandria Desert Road at El Remayah Square, a couple of kilometres from the pyramids plateau, according to Voyaged Magazine (2026). By car, that’s about 10–15 minutes from Giza hotels or the pyramids area. Wikipedia puts the distance at about 2 km (Wikipedia).
That short hop is why combining them works so well. You don’t lose half the day in Cairo traffic between the two.
How much does a museum and pyramids day cost?
You need two tickets, bought separately. In 2026, the official Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities page lists the Giza plateau area ticket at EGP 700 for foreign adults and EGP 350 for foreign students (Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities).
| Ticket (foreign visitor) | Adult | Student |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Egyptian Museum (from 1 Nov 2026) | EGP 1,830 | EGP 920 |
| Giza plateau area entry | EGP 700 | EGP 350 |
The plateau ticket doesn’t cover the inside of the Great Pyramid, the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, or some tombs. Those cost extra, according to the same official page. Museum prices are in our ticket price guide.
Should you see the museum or the pyramids first?
Both orders work. The fixed point is the clock: the Giza plateau is open 08:00–16:00 (Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities), while the museum galleries open 9:00–18:00 (Sun, Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri) and 9:00–21:00 (Wed & Sat) (GEM ticketing site).
Option A: museum first. A 2026 first-hand guide recommends this order, because doing the pyramids first tends to mean a busier museum visit (Voyaged Magazine). Book an early museum slot, then head to the plateau by early afternoon so you’re not rushed before it closes.
Option B: pyramids first. Go at opening, when it’s cooler. Then spend the afternoon in the air-conditioned museum. On Wednesday or Saturday the galleries stay open late, so you won’t feel rushed.
A sample day (option A)
- Morning: hotel pickup, enter the GEM on an early slot. See Tutankhamun first, then the Grand Staircase and Khufu’s boat.
- Lunch: eat in the museum complex. Lunchtime queues start around 12:30 (Voyaged Magazine), so go earlier or later.
- Afternoon: 10–15 minutes by car to the plateau. Visit the pyramids and the Sphinx before the 16:00 closing.
Is a museum and pyramids tour worth it?
For a first visit, a combined tour removes most of the friction: two ticket systems, two drives and the touts around the plateau. You pay for that convenience. Going on your own costs the two tickets plus ride-hailing fares.

When you compare combined tours, check whether both tickets are included. In October 2026, the combined tours we checked on Viator ranged from about US$30 to US$185 per person. The cheapest ones often left entry fees out. See all options on our Grand Egyptian Museum tours page, or go private if you want your own guide.
How do you avoid scams at the pyramids?
The plateau has more hustlers than the museum. The best known: someone insists you must ride a camel or a horse to get in. You don’t. If you want a ride, agree the total price, duration and route first.
