Grand Egyptian Museum Private Tour: Prices, Guides and What to Check

Your own Egyptologist and car is often cheaper in Cairo than you'd expect. What the low prices include, and what they leave out.

A private Grand Egyptian Museum tour gets you your own Egyptologist guide, a car from your hotel, and a visit at your pace. Museum-only private tours on Viator started from about US$19 per person when we checked in October 2026, but that price often leaves out the museum ticket. Below: what’s included, what isn’t, and what to ask before you pay.

In short

  • Private GEM tours start from about US$19–US$49 per person (Viator, October 2026).
  • Check the ticket: included, optional or extra (EGP 1,830 per foreign adult).
  • Confirm the guide’s language and the pickup zone.
  • Private guides help most in the busy Tutankhamun galleries.

What do you get on a private Grand Egyptian Museum tour?

In October 2026, the private museum tours we checked on Viator all listed hotel pickup and drop-off and a guide. Many described an Egyptologist guide. Durations ranged from about 3 to 5 hours, door to door. Entry fees were the main difference between them.

Is the museum ticket included in a private tour?

Check the entry line first. Listings fall into three groups: ticket included, ticket included only with an “all-inclusive” option, and ticket not included. If it’s not included, add EGP 1,830 per foreign adult, or EGP 920 per student or child, from 1 November 2026 (Egypt Independent).

Buying the ticket yourself? Use only the official ticket website , and book a slot that matches your pickup time.

Why choose private over a group tour?

Pace. The museum displays more than 24,000 objects (Wikipedia). A private guide can skip what doesn’t interest you and spend longer where it does. With children, that flexibility matters even more.

Private tours in Cairo are often priced close to small group tours. So the real comparison is the per-person price for your group size, with the ticket included.

Private museum and Pyramids tours

Most private tours can add the Pyramids and the Sphinx. The plateau has its own ticket, EGP 700 per foreign adult (Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities). Expect a full day of 6–10 hours.

What should you check before booking a private guide?

Five details make the difference:

  1. Entry ticket: included, optional or extra?
  2. Guide language: live guide in your language, confirmed in writing.
  3. Pickup zone: some listings exclude areas such as New Cairo, Nasr City or 6th of October City.
  4. No shopping stops: ask for it in writing.
  5. Cancellation deadline: free cancellation is common, but check the cut-off.

Questions people ask

How much is a private tour of the Grand Egyptian Museum?

In October 2026, private Grand Egyptian Museum tours on Viator started from about US$19 to US$49 per person for museum-only visits. Check whether the museum ticket (EGP 1,830) is included or offered as an option.

Is a private guide allowed inside the Grand Egyptian Museum?

Licensed guides lead tours inside the museum, and many private tours include an Egyptologist guide. Book through a platform or a licensed operator, not with someone who approaches you at the entrance.

Is a private tour better than a group tour?

A private tour lets you set the pace and focus, for example spending longer with Tutankhamun. In Cairo, private tours are often priced close to group tours, so compare the per-person price for your group size.

Can a private tour pick me up from the airport?

Some listings offer pickup from airport-area hotels or the airport. Check the pickup zone on the listing; some exclude areas like New Cairo or 6th of October City.
