Visitors arriving at the Grand Egyptian Museum entrance, a stop on Cairo layover tours

A long layover at Cairo airport is enough to see the Grand Egyptian Museum and the pyramids. The layover tours we checked on Viator in October 2026 lasted about 8 to 10 hours, with airport pickup, a guide and lunch, from about US$48 per person. Entry fees and the visa were extra on both.

In short

  • Layover tours last about 8–10 hours, airport to airport (Viator listings, October 2026).
  • From about US$48 per person; private from about US$130.
  • Entry fees and visa are not included in the tours we checked.
  • Pickup at Cairo International (CAI); one also serves Sphinx Airport (SPX).

How long a layover do you need?

The tours themselves take about 8 to 10 hours. On top of that, you need time to clear immigration and collect any bags on arrival, and to get back through security for your next flight. Ask the operator for their minimum layover before you book, and keep a buffer: Cairo traffic is unpredictable.

What’s extra on a layover tour?

None of the layover tours we checked included entry fees, and two listed the entry visa as extra. Budget for:

Extra Cost
Grand Egyptian Museum (foreign adult, from 1 Nov 2026) EGP 1,830
Giza plateau area entry (foreign adult) EGP 700
Visa Depends on your nationality: check before you fly

Which layover tours go to the Grand Egyptian Museum?

All include airport pickup and drop-off and an Egyptologist. The shortest covers only the GEM (about 5–6 hours); the longer ones add the pyramids and lunch, and one also picks up at Sphinx Airport.

All the trips we compared are in the Book this visit section above, sorted by price.

Should you see the museum or the pyramids first?

On a layover, the clock decides. The Giza plateau is open 08:00–16:00 (Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities); the museum galleries are open 9:00–18:00 (Sun, Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri) and 9:00–21:00 (Wed & Sat) (GEM ticketing site). If you land in the afternoon, the pyramids have to come first. On Wednesday and Saturday the museum stays open late, which helps evening connections.

The two sites are about 10–15 minutes from Giza hotels or the pyramids area apart by car, so you won’t lose much time between them. More in our museum and pyramids day plan.
