They’re two different museums. The Egyptian Museum is on the northern side of Tahrir Square in downtown Cairo and has been open since 1902. The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is in Giza, next to the pyramids, and opened to the public on 4 November 2025. The big change for visitors: Tutankhamun’s treasures have moved to the GEM.
In short
- Tutankhamun’s collection, gold mask included, is now at the GEM (AFP via Khaleej Times, 2025).
- The Tahrir museum still holds over 170,000 items (Wikipedia).
- The royal mummies are at a third museum, the NMEC.
- One day only? Most first-timers choose the GEM.
What’s the difference between the two museums?
The Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square opened in 1902 and holds over 170,000 items, according to Wikipedia. The Grand Egyptian Museum opened to the public in November 2025 and displays more than 24,000 objects in a new building near the pyramids (Wikipedia).

Where is Tutankhamun now?
At the Grand Egyptian Museum. When the Tutankhamun galleries opened in November 2025, AFP reported over 4,500 objects displayed together for the first time, with the golden mask at the centre of the main Tutankhamun hall (AFP via Khaleej Times). The mummy itself remains in the Valley of the Kings, Luxor; only the coffins are at the GEM.

What can you still see at the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square?
Plenty. Wikipedia lists highlights still on display including the Narmer Palette, statues of Djoser, Khafre and Menkaure, the Tanis treasures and the Yuya and Thuya collection (Wikipedia). Transfers to the GEM are ongoing, so check what’s on show before you go.
The historic building itself is part of the appeal: a 1902 museum in the heart of downtown Cairo.
Where are the royal mummies?
In neither museum. In April 2021, 22 royal mummies were moved to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC), during the Pharaohs’ Golden Parade (Wikipedia). If mummies are on your list, plan a separate visit to the NMEC, or book a tour that combines it with the GEM.
Which museum should you visit?
If you only have one day, choose the GEM. It holds Tutankhamun, it’s next to the pyramids, and you can combine both in one day. Choose the Tahrir museum too if you have more time, love Egyptian antiquities, or are staying downtown.
- First visit, one day: GEM + Pyramids.
- Two or more days: GEM, then Tahrir and/or the NMEC on another day.
- Mummies a must: GEM + NMEC tour (below).
