The Grand Egyptian Museum's facade and obelisk in Giza, with hotels now open across the road

The hotels nearest the Grand Egyptian Museum are in Giza, right across the road. The Occidental Cairo Grand Museum and the Steigenberger Pyramids Cairo both say they’re opposite the GEM, and Marriott Mena House sits at the foot of the pyramids. From most Giza hotels, the museum is about 10–15 minutes from Giza hotels or the pyramids area (Voyaged Magazine, 2026).

In short

  • Two hotels face the museum: Occidental Cairo Grand Museum (opened September 2026) and Steigenberger Pyramids Cairo.
  • Marriott Mena House is the historic choice, right by the pyramids.
  • Central Cairo is about 30–40 minutes by car from central Cairo, depending on traffic away.
  • Our suggestion: 1–2 nights in Giza, the rest in central Cairo.

A word on how we built this list. We have no hotel affiliate, and we haven’t stayed in these hotels. We list them from official sources; we haven’t reviewed them in person. So there are no star ratings, scores or prices here, and no “best hotel” claim. Compare them yourself on recent reviews.

Which hotels are closest to the Grand Egyptian Museum?

Two hotels sit directly across from the museum. The Occidental Cairo Grand Museum, run by Barceló, opened on 1 September 2026 with 207 rooms (Travel Extra, 2026). The Steigenberger Pyramids Cairo describes itself as “directly opposite” the GEM and 3 km from the pyramids (Steigenberger).

Opposite the museum

The Occidental Cairo Grand Museum lists its address as 02 El Mansouria Road, Grand Pyramids Tower, Kafr Nassar, Giza. Its official page says it’s “located opposite the Grand Egyptian Museum” and has a rooftop pool and bar “with the pyramids of Giza as a backdrop” (Barceló). It’s only been open since September, so recent reviews will be thin for now.

The Steigenberger Pyramids Cairo gives some handy distances on its official page: Sphinx International Airport 25 km, Cairo International Airport 53 km, and the city centre 25 km (Steigenberger). That airport detail matters. If you fly into Sphinx, you start and end the trip on the Giza side of town.

By the pyramids

Marriott Mena House began as Khedive Ismail’s hunting lodge and opened as a hotel in the 1880s. It took the Marriott Mena House name in February 2018 (eHotelier, 2018). Its historic Palace wing is being renovated to become JW Marriott Cairo Mena House, with no confirmed reopening date (CairoScene). Ask which wing your room is in.

Two more names you’ll see. Le Méridien Pyramids Hotel & Spa, on El Remaya Square, is currently closed: Marriott lists it as closed until further notice (checked October 2026). The Hyatt Regency Cairo West opened in 2022 farther west, at KM 22 of the Cairo–Alexandria Desert Road (Enterprise, 2025). That’s about 10 km by road from the museum, so check on a map.

Can you get a pyramid view from your room?

Yes, but usually only from certain rooms, so read the room type. The Steigenberger sells museum-view and pyramids-and-museum-view rooms (Steigenberger). Mena House has pyramid views from some rooms only. At the Occidental, the official page puts the pyramids behind the rooftop pool rather than promising them from every room.

The Giza pyramids on the desert plateau, a few kilometres from the hotels facing the Grand Egyptian Museum
The plateau is a couple of kilometres from the museum. Whether you see it from bed depends on the room you book.

Our advice is simple. If the view is the point, book the room category that names it, and keep the confirmation. A “pyramid view” from a high floor across a busy road isn’t the same as one from a rooftop next to the plateau. Both can be lovely. Just know which one you’re paying for.

What about guesthouses near the Sphinx entrance?

Small guesthouses cluster in Nazlet el-Semman, the neighbourhood by the Sphinx entrance to the plateau. Many advertise rooftop terraces facing the pyramids. They’re a different kind of stay from the big hotels: smaller, simpler, and closer to the street life around the plateau. The museum is still about 10–15 minutes from Giza hotels or the pyramids area by car.

Be careful when booking. Many of these places have very similar names, so it’s easy to book the wrong one. Check the exact address on a map, read recent reviews, and confirm how you’ll get from the guesthouse to the museum.

Giza or central Cairo?

Giza is the better base for the museum and the pyramids; central Cairo is better for almost everything else. Lonely Planet names Giza as the area for the pyramids and Downtown as the most central base (Lonely Planet). From central Cairo, the museum is about 30–40 minutes by car from central Cairo, depending on traffic (Voyaged Magazine, 2026).

That gap sounds small on paper. In practice, Cairo traffic decides it, and you’ll feel it twice if you do the museum and the pyramids on separate days. Staying in Giza also lets you book an early museum slot without a long ride first.

Here’s what we’d suggest, and it’s a common approach:

  1. Nights 1–2 in Giza. Museum one day, pyramids the next, or both in one day. Our museum and pyramids plan shows how to split them.
  2. The rest in Downtown or Zamalek. You’re closer to the old Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square, the Nile and the rest of the city. See our Cairo itinerary for ideas.

Only one night in Cairo? Then Giza, if the museum and the pyramids are why you came.

How do you get from your hotel to the museum?

From the hotels across the road, it’s a short hop, so ask at reception whether guests walk or drive; from elsewhere in Giza, it’s about 10–15 minutes from Giza hotels or the pyramids area. Public transport is limited (no practical metro or bus option for visitors yet; a metro station for the site (Line 4) is under construction), so most visitors take a taxi or a ride-hailing app: Uber or Careem: set the destination to “Grand Egyptian Museum” and see the fare before you book (Voyaged Magazine, 2026). All the options are in our how to get there guide.

Whichever way you arrive, book your timed ticket first on the official site; the tickets guide explains how.

The tours at the top of this page all pick you up at your hotel and cover the museum and the pyramids in one day. Before booking, check that your hotel is inside the pickup area, whether the museum ticket is included or only in a higher option, and the guide’s language.

Which hotels are opening soon?

At least three more hotels near the museum have been announced, though opening dates in Giza often slip. The most advanced is a Sofitel Legend Pyramids Giza, about 300 rooms, which Accor and Abu Dhabi Tourism Investments are targeting for mid-2027 (Zawya, 2026).

  • Sofitel Legend Pyramids Giza: about 300 rooms, mid-2027 target (Zawya, 2026).
  • A Hyatt-branded hotel: 400 rooms overlooking the pyramids and the museum, announced by ADD Properties, no date given (Enterprise, 2025).
  • A five-star hotel across from the GEM: by Misr Abu Dhabi Real Estate, targeting 2028 (Scene Traveller, 2025).

Treat these as plans, not bookings. We’ll add them to the table when they open.

Questions people ask

Which hotels are closest to the Grand Egyptian Museum?

Two hotels describe themselves as opposite the museum: the Occidental Cairo Grand Museum, which opened on 1 September 2026, and the Steigenberger Pyramids Cairo, about 3 km from the pyramids. Marriott Mena House sits at the foot of the pyramids. We haven't stayed in any of them.

Should I stay in Giza or central Cairo?

Giza puts you about 10–15 minutes from Giza hotels or the pyramids area from the museum, and next to the pyramids. Central Cairo is better for everything else, but the museum is about 30–40 minutes by car from central Cairo, depending on traffic. Our suggestion: one or two nights in Giza for the museum and pyramids, the rest in the centre.

Can I get a hotel room with a pyramid view in Giza?

Yes, but only in some rooms. The Steigenberger Pyramids Cairo sells museum-view and pyramids-and-museum-view rooms, Marriott Mena House has pyramid views from some rooms, and many small guesthouses near the Sphinx entrance have rooftops facing the plateau. Check the exact room type before you pay.

Is there a hotel inside the Grand Egyptian Museum?

No. The museum complex has cafés and restaurants but no hotel. The closest hotels are across the road from the museum, which sits just off the Cairo–Alexandria Desert Road at El Remayah Square, a couple of kilometres from the pyramids plateau. Ask your hotel how guests usually reach the entrance, and book your timed ticket on the official website first.
