Yes, you can reach the Grand Egyptian Museum from Luxor, but packaged day trips that include it are rare. When we checked Viator and GetYourGuide in October 2026, we found just one without shop stops: an overnight road trip from US$572 per person. For most people, flying to Cairo (about an hour) and booking an airport pickup tour works better.
In short
- One packaged GEM trip from Luxor without shop stops: overnight by road, about 9 hours each way, from US$572, entry fees extra (Viator, October 2026).
- Flying is faster: about 1 hour to 1 h 10 nonstop, with several flights a day.
- The overnight sleeper train takes about 9 hours. It’s best if you stay in Giza.
- Check that the itinerary names the Grand Egyptian Museum, not only Tahrir.
Is there a day trip from Luxor to the Grand Egyptian Museum?
Barely. When we checked Viator and GetYourGuide in October 2026, we found one packaged trip from Luxor that visits the Grand Egyptian Museum and has no shop stops in its itinerary. It’s on Viator, it runs overnight by road, and it starts from US$572 per person, with entry fees extra.
The rest didn’t make the cut. A GetYourGuide “Day Tour to Cairo from Luxor by Flight” (from US$124) visits the old Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square, not the GEM, and its itinerary includes a “Shopping tour”. Several Viator “Cairo from Luxor by flight” trips also skip the GEM, or add papyrus, alabaster and jewellery stops.
Why does the museum matter so much? Because Tutankhamun’s treasures are now in Giza (AFP via Khaleej Times, 2025). There’s an irony for visitors coming from Luxor: Tutankhamun’s mummy remains in the Valley of the Kings, Luxor; only the coffins are at the GEM. If you’ve just seen his tomb, the GEM completes the story.
How does the overnight road trip from Luxor work?
It’s a long haul built around sleeping on the road. Going by the times in the Viator itinerary we checked in October 2026, the drive takes about 9 hours each way, and you spend one full day in Giza in between. Here’s how it runs:
- Around 8 pm: pickup at your Luxor hotel, after dinner in Luxor.
- Around 6 am: arrival in Cairo, then breakfast.
- Daytime: the Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum, lunch and a camel ride.
- Around 4 pm: departure from Cairo.
- Around midnight: back in Luxor.
Guides are offered in English, French, German and Spanish. All entrance fees are excluded, so add the museum and plateau tickets to the US$572 (more on that below).
Is it worth it? If you want everything arranged and you sleep well in a moving vehicle, maybe. We’d hesitate: you arrive after a night on the road and leave again the same afternoon, which doesn’t leave much energy for a museum this size.
Is flying from Luxor to Cairo the better option?
For most visitors, yes. A nonstop flight from Luxor to Cairo takes about 1 hour to 1 h 10, and EgyptAir, Air Cairo and Nile Air fly the route several times a day (FlightsFrom; FlightMapper). Schedules change, so check current timetables before you plan.
You book the flight yourself, then pair it with a Cairo airport pickup tour. It works like this:
- Fly Luxor to Cairo on a morning flight.
- Meet your guide at the airport. The tour picks you up at arrivals; some tours also pick up at Sphinx Airport (SPX).
- Visit the GEM, the Pyramids, or both with an Egyptologist. The GEM-only option we list runs about 5 to 6 hours; museum-and-pyramids tours run about 8 to 10.
- Get dropped back at the airport for an evening flight, or at a Giza hotel if you’re staying.
The tours at the top of this page are the airport tours we’d shortlist. Before you book, check three things: which airport they pick up from, how long the tour lasts compared with your flight times, and the guide language. Entry fees are extra on all of them. Our Cairo layover tour guide compares them in more detail.
One more step: museum tickets are timed. On the official site, tickets are valid only for the date and time slot you choose; the slot sets when you enter, not how long you stay; one entry per ticket, no re-entry; non-refundable and non-transferable (Grand Egyptian Museum). Choose a slot that leaves room for a late flight. Our ticket guide walks through booking.
What about the sleeper train from Luxor to Cairo?
It’s the slow option, and it suits a longer stay. The overnight sleeper between Cairo and Luxor takes about 9 hours over 671 km of track (Seat61). In Cairo, tourist sleepers use Giza station and run in the evening (Alternative Egypt), but that page is undated, so check current times.
We wouldn’t use the train for a same-day return. It makes more sense as a way to arrive in Giza rested, spend one or two nights near the museum, and see it without rushing. Our Cairo itinerary shows how to fill two days, and our hotels near the museum guide covers where to stay.
Which option should you choose?
It depends on how much time you have. The overnight road trip from US$572 is the only packaged GEM option from Luxor we found without shop stops (Viator, October 2026). A flight of about an hour plus an airport tour is faster. The train suits a slower trip.
| Option | Time each way | What’s included | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overnight road trip (Viator) | About 9 hours by road | Luxor hotel pickup, dinner, breakfast, lunch, guide, Pyramids, GEM, camel ride; entry fees extra | Travellers who want it all arranged and can sleep on the road |
| Flight + Cairo airport tour | About 1 h to 1 h 10 in the air | Flight booked separately; tour covers airport pickup, Egyptologist, GEM and/or Pyramids, drop-off; entry fees extra | Most visitors, especially with one day to spare |
| Sleeper train + nights in Giza | About 9 hours by rail | A bed overnight; museum and pyramids planned yourself | Slower trips with one or two nights in Giza |
Our pick? Fly. You trade a night on the road for an hour in the air, and you arrive with enough energy for the galleries.
Why did we leave out the cheaper flight packages?
Because of the itineraries. When we checked in October 2026, the cheapest “Cairo from Luxor by flight” packages, from about US$124 on GetYourGuide, either visited the old Tahrir museum instead of the GEM or listed shopping stops. Some Viator flight trips added papyrus, alabaster or jewellery shops.
You’re rarely forced to buy, but on a day this short, every hour counts. More on this in our scams guide.
How much time and money do you need in Giza?
Plan on two tickets and most of a day. From 1 November 2026, the museum costs EGP 1,830 per foreign adult and the Giza plateau EGP 700 (Egypt Independent, 2026; Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities).
The galleries are open 9:00–18:00 (Sun, Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri) and 9:00–21:00 (Wed & Sat), and the plateau 08:00–16:00. In our view, the museum needs at least 3–4 hours, and the plateau closes first. If you land early, see the pyramids in the morning; if not, give most of the day to the museum. Our museum and pyramids day plan shows both orders.

Questions people ask
Is there a day trip from Luxor to the Grand Egyptian Museum?
Yes, but packaged ones are rare. When we checked Viator and GetYourGuide in October 2026, we found one that includes the GEM without shop stops: an overnight road trip, about 9 hours each way, from US$572 per person. Entry fees are extra: EGP 1,830 for the museum and EGP 700 for the Giza plateau.
How long is the flight from Luxor to Cairo?
A nonstop flight takes about 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes. EgyptAir, Air Cairo and Nile Air fly the route several times a day, according to flight schedule sites. Timetables change by season, so check current flights before you plan a same-day visit to the museum and the pyramids.
Can you go from Luxor to the Grand Egyptian Museum and back in one day?
By plane it's possible if you take an early flight to Cairo and an evening flight back, but it's a tight day. The museum alone needs at least 3–4 hours. If you can, spend one or two nights in Giza instead, or take the overnight sleeper train, about 9 hours each way.
Do all Cairo trips from Luxor visit the Grand Egyptian Museum?
No. Some visit only the older Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square in downtown Cairo, and some add papyrus, alabaster or jewellery shop stops. Tutankhamun's collection is now at the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, so check that the itinerary names the GEM before you book.
