Yes, for most visitors the Grand Egyptian Museum is worth it. From 1 November 2026, a foreign adult ticket costs EGP 1,830. For that, you see Tutankhamun’s treasures together for the first time, a colossal Ramses II and Khufu’s 4,600-year-old boat, a few minutes from the pyramids. It isn’t for everyone, though, and it rewards a little planning.
In short
- Tutankhamun: over 4,500 objects shown together for the first time (AFP via Khaleej Times, 2025).
- Ticket: EGP 1,830 per foreign adult from 1 Nov 2026.
- Plan at least 3–4 hours.
- Best value if you combine it with the Giza pyramids.
What do you get for the ticket?
The museum displays more than 24,000 objects across 12 main galleries (Wikipedia). Four highlights alone justify the visit for most people:
- Tutankhamun’s treasures: over 4,500 objects, golden mask included (AFP via Khaleej Times, 2025).
- Ramses II: a colossal statue, 11 m tall, 83 tonnes, in the Grand Hall.
- The Grand Staircase: about six storeys tall, with more than 60 artefacts.
- Khufu’s boat: Khufu’s boat, about 4,600 years old, in its own hall; a second boat is being restored in a live lab.
Who will love the Grand Egyptian Museum?
First-time visitors to Egypt, families and anyone curious about Tutankhamun. Seeing the whole tomb collection in one place is new: before November 2025 it was split and partly in storage. The building is also a big part of the experience, with the pyramids close by.
It also works well on a short trip. Because it’s a short drive from the plateau, you can see the GEM and the pyramids in one day. Our museum and pyramids plan shows how.
Who might be disappointed?
Visitors who expect to see everything in an hour. The museum is big, and the Tutankhamun galleries get busy. If you have less than two hours, focus on Tutankhamun and the Grand Staircase, and skip the rest without guilt.
Mummy fans should know the royal mummies aren’t here: in 2021, 22 royal mummies were moved to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC). Our GEM vs Egyptian Museum comparison explains where everything is now.
How do you get the most out of a visit?
Book an early slot, go to Tutankhamun first, and plan at least 3–4 hours. Your slot sets when you enter, not when you leave (GEM ticketing site). Eat before or after the lunch rush, which starts around 12:30 (Voyaged Magazine, 2026).
Is a guided tour worth it?
If you want the stories behind the objects, yes. A guide can turn a long list of cases into a story, and many tours handle tickets and transport too. If you’re happy to read labels and book a ride-hailing car, going alone is cheaper.

Questions people ask
Is the Grand Egyptian Museum worth the ticket price?
For most visitors, yes. From 1 November 2026, a foreign adult ticket costs EGP 1,830, and it covers Tutankhamun's treasures (over 4,500 objects shown together), the Grand Staircase, Ramses II and Khufu's boat.
How long should I spend at the Grand Egyptian Museum?
Plan at least 3–4 hours. The museum displays more than 24,000 objects, so prioritise what you most want to see.
Is the Grand Egyptian Museum better than the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir?
For a first visit, most travellers choose the GEM because it now holds Tutankhamun's full collection and is next to the pyramids. The Tahrir museum still has a huge collection and suits travellers with more time.
