The best time to visit the Grand Egyptian Museum is a weekday morning in spring (March to May) or September, in the first time slot of the day. Lonely Planet names those months as good for avoiding crowds (Lonely Planet), and the earliest slots are the quietest. Avoid Friday and Saturday, when attendance has topped capacity.
In short
- Best months: March–May and September (Lonely Planet).
- Best days: Sunday to Thursday. Friday and Saturday are Egypt’s weekend and the busiest.
- Best hour: the first slot, Tutankhamun first.
- Busiest season: roughly December to February.
- Book online ahead; peak slots can sell out.
Which month is best to visit?
March to May and September are the best months, according to Lonely Planet, which names them as good for avoiding crowds. The busiest season runs roughly December to February (In Your Pocket Cairo). Inside, the museum is air-conditioned, so the temperatures below matter mostly for the pyramids and the gardens.
| Month | Avg high | Avg low | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 18.9 °C | 10.1 °C | Peak season. Mild, busy, book early. |
| February | 20.5 °C | 11.0 °C | Peak season. Sun on Ramses II on the 21st; Ramadan 2027 expected from about the 8th. |
| March | 23.8 °C | 13.2 °C | A good pick. Eid al-Fitr expected about 9–10 March 2027. |
| April | 28.1 °C | 15.9 °C | A good pick: warm, not yet hot. |
| May | 32.2 °C | 19.3 °C | Still good, hot on the plateau. Eid al-Adha expected about 16–17 May 2027. |
| June | 34.6 °C | 22.2 °C | Hot outside, quieter inside. |
| July | 35.0 °C | 23.8 °C | Hottest month. Museum fine, plateau tough by midday. |
| August | 34.9 °C | 24.3 °C | Same as July. |
| September | 33.4 °C | 22.7 °C | Good for crowds, still hot outside. |
| October | 30.0 °C | 20.0 °C | Warm days, pleasant evenings, before the winter peak. |
| November | 24.9 °C | 15.6 °C | Comfortable weather. Eternal Sun evenings from 1 November 2026. |
| December | 20.5 °C | 11.7 °C | Peak season; prices highest around Christmas and New Year (Lonely Planet). |
Temperatures are 1991–2020 averages for Cairo International Airport (Wikipedia, citing the Egyptian Meteorological Authority and NOAA). Rain barely registers: about 24.8 mm a year. If you can choose, our pick is April. It’s comfortable on the plateau, outside the winter rush, and before the summer heat.
Which day of the week is quietest?
Sunday to Thursday. In November 2025, when the museum drew 17,000 to 20,000 visitors a day, its CEO Ahmed Ghoneim said numbers “rise significantly on weekends”, and a government source said attendance exceeded capacity on Friday and Saturday (EnterpriseAM, 2025).
Egypt’s weekend is Friday and Saturday, so that’s when Egyptian families have time off. A month later, the cabinet put the daily average at about 15,000 visitors a day, the museum’s maximum daily capacity (Egyptian Streets, 2025). Those were opening-season figures, and they’ll move. The weekly pattern is the useful part.
What time of day is best?
The first slot of the day. The earliest entries have the smallest crowds, especially in the Tutankhamun Galleries (In Your Pocket Cairo). The galleries open at 9:00, so book that slot and walk straight to Tutankhamun before the tour groups build up. Then do the Grand Staircase and the rest.
Your slot sets when you enter, not when you leave: tickets are valid only for the date and time slot you choose; the slot sets when you enter, not how long you stay; one entry per ticket, no re-entry; non-refundable and non-transferable. So an early slot simply buys you more time. Plan at least 3–4 hours. Last entry is 17:00 (Sun, Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri) and 20:00 (Wed & Sat), which is why we’d avoid starting after early afternoon on a normal day. You’d be rushing the second half.
Eat early or late. There are several cafés and restaurants inside the complex, including Zooba (Egyptian street food) and coffee shops; lunchtime queues start around 12:30. Our full schedule is in the opening hours guide, and the Tutankhamun guide covers what to see first.
The tours at the top of this page include guided visits with hotel pickup, a ticket-only option and an evening tour. Before you pick one, check the pickup time, whether the museum ticket is included, and which entry slot the guide books for you. Ask for the first one.
Is summer a bad time to visit?
Not for the museum. Ahram Online reported 7,000 to 10,000 visitors a day in summer 2026, and the CEO linked the drop to heat and seasonality (Ahram Online, 2026). That’s well under the 15,000-a-day capacity. The galleries are air-conditioned, so a July visit can be calmer than a January one.
The catch is outside. Cairo averages 35.0 °C in July, and the Giza plateau has little shade. It’s open 08:00–16:00 (Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities), so in summer we’d see the pyramids at opening and spend the hot afternoon in the museum. Our museum and pyramids plan shows both orders.
What changes during Ramadan and Eid?
Shorter hours. When Ramadan hours were last announced, in January 2025, the ministry set them at 9:00–16:00 during Ramadan (Egyptian Streets, 2025). Ramadan 2027 is expected to start around 8 February 2027 (Khaleej Times, 2026).
Those dates are astronomical estimates. Egypt’s are set by Dar al-Ifta and may differ by a day. Eid al-Fitr is expected about 9–10 March 2027 and Eid al-Adha about 16–17 May 2027. Eid holidays will likely bring more local visitors, much like a weekend. If your trip overlaps, go on a weekday morning and confirm the hours for your date on the official ticket website .
Are there special dates worth planning around?
Two. The first is the Ramses II sun alignment: the sun is meant to light the colossal statue’s face on the morning of 21 February, a day before the Abu Simbel alignment (clouds can hide it, as in 2023) (Egypt Independent, 2023; Arab News, 2023). Abu Simbel’s own alignments fall on 22 February and 22 October.
In 2027, 21 February is expected to fall during Ramadan, so check the hours and any special arrangements first. More on the statue is in our Ramses II guide.
The second is the Eternal Sun evenings. From 1 November 2026, the museum runs a 35-minute light, music and projection-mapping show in the Grand Hall, after dark, with bilingual storytelling (GEM ticketing site). Show days and prices weren’t confirmed when we checked, so look them up in the booking flow. Our night tour guide covers evening visits.
One more thing: check for one-off closures. The museum closed for a day on 2 September 2026 (Khaleej Times, 2026), even though it’s normally open every day.
How far ahead should you book?
As soon as your dates are fixed, and earlier for December to February. Since 1 December 2025 tickets are sold online only, weekends and holidays included, with timed entry in place since 16 November 2025 (Egyptian Streets, 2025).
Yes — book a timed ticket online on the official ticket website before your visit. In peak season the early slots can sell out ahead (In Your Pocket Cairo), and those are exactly the ones you want. Book only on the official site; fake ticket pages exist, as our scams guide explains. Step-by-step booking is in the tickets guide.

Questions people ask
What is the best time to visit the Grand Egyptian Museum?
A weekday morning in March, April, May or September. Lonely Planet names those months as good for avoiding crowds, and the earliest time slots are the quietest. The galleries open 9:00–18:00 (Sun, Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri) and 9:00–21:00 (Wed & Sat), so book the first slot and head to the Tutankhamun Galleries first.
What is the busiest day at the Grand Egyptian Museum?
Friday and Saturday, Egypt's weekend. In November 2025 the museum's CEO said visitor numbers rise significantly on weekends, and a government source said attendance exceeded capacity on both days. The cabinet puts the average at about 15,000 visitors a day, the museum’s maximum daily capacity. Sunday to Thursday is calmer.
What are the Grand Egyptian Museum's Ramadan hours?
The ministry announced 9:00–16:00 during Ramadan in January 2025. Ramadan 2027 is expected to start around 8 February 2027, but that's an astronomical estimate and Egypt may differ by a day. Confirm the hours on the official ticket website before you book, as they can change.
Is summer a bad time to visit the Grand Egyptian Museum?
Not for the museum itself, which is air-conditioned. Cairo's average July high is 35 °C, so the heat hits the Giza plateau and the outdoor gardens instead. Ahram Online reported 7,000 to 10,000 visitors a day in summer 2026, far below the winter crowds.
