The Grand Egyptian Museum facade and obelisk, the starting point of a 2- or 3-day Cairo itinerary

Two days in Cairo are enough to see the Grand Egyptian Museum, the Giza pyramids and one more great site; three days let you add the royal mummies or historic Cairo at an easy pace. Below is a day-by-day plan, with the tour that fits each day in the Book this visit section above, sorted by price.

In short

  • Day 1: Grand Egyptian Museum + Giza pyramids (they’re 10–15 minutes apart).
  • Day 2: Saqqara and Memphis, or the royal mummies.
  • Day 3 (optional): historic Cairo, or the GEM in the evening.
  • Book day tours separately: the multi-day packages we checked included shopping stops.

Day 1: the Grand Egyptian Museum and the pyramids

Start with the two sites everyone comes for. The museum is about 10–15 minutes from Giza hotels or the pyramids area from the pyramids by car (Voyaged Magazine, 2026), so they fit in one day.

Tickets: EGP 1,830 for the museum and EGP 700 for the plateau, per foreign adult. The full timing plan is in our museum and pyramids guide.

Day 2: Saqqara and Memphis, or the royal mummies

Pick one of two very different days:

Saqqara and Memphis. The necropolis of Saqqara, with the Step Pyramid of Djoser, and the ruins of Memphis, the old capital, south of Giza. A full-day tour usually combines both with the Giza plateau if you skipped it on day 1.

The royal mummies. In 2021, 22 royal mummies were moved to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) (Wikipedia). Some tours pair it with the GEM; on day 2 you can visit it alone or together with the historic Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square. See our GEM vs Egyptian Museum comparison.

The pyramids of Giza from the desert, part of day one or day two of a Cairo itinerary
Most itineraries cover the Giza pyramids on day one, with the museum.

Day 3: historic Cairo, or the GEM after dark

With a third day, slow down. Two good options:

  • Historic Cairo: the Citadel, Coptic Cairo and the old streets around Khan el-Khalili. Go with a guide or on your own; it’s the day to wander.
  • The museum in the evening: on Wednesday and Saturday the galleries stay open until 21:00, and from 1 November 2026 the Grand Hall hosts the Eternal Sun light show (GEM ticketing site). Details in our GEM at night guide.

Package or separate day tours?

We looked for multi-day packages that include the GEM. The ones we checked in October 2026 listed a “shopping tour in Cairo” or a bazaar visit, so we don’t recommend them. Booking a separate tour for each day lets you choose the guide, the pace and what’s included, and you can still use hotel pickup every day.

Coming from the Red Sea? See our day trips from Hurghada and from Sharm El Sheikh, including 2-day options with a night near the pyramids.

Questions people ask

Are 2 days in Cairo enough?

For the essentials, yes: one day for the Grand Egyptian Museum and the Giza pyramids, and one for Saqqara and Memphis or the royal mummies. A third day lets you add historic Cairo without rushing.

Should I see the Grand Egyptian Museum on the first day?

It's a good choice: Tutankhamun's treasures and the pyramids give context for everything else. If your first day is a Wednesday or Saturday, the museum stays open until 21:00.

Are there multi-day Grand Egyptian Museum tour packages?

A few exist, but the multi-day packages we checked in October 2026 included a shopping tour or a bazaar visit. Booking separate day tours lets you choose exactly what each day covers.
